Easytools currently offers three pricing plans, each tailored to different sales volumes:

• Side project - $29/month with a 3% commission
• Full-time creator - $59/month with a 2% commission
• Entrepreneur - $99/month with a 1% commission

Gumroad, on the other hand, keeps hiking its prices. In Dec 2022, their commission jumped to 10%. In Jan 2025, they added another $0.50 fee to each transaction. No surprise it continuously triggers a wave of backlash and departures.

A 10% commission is one thing, but Gumroad also piles on extra payment processing fees from Stripe and PayPal. This is standard, as Easytools also charges a commission on the top of Stripe fees. Yet, if you tally all of Gumroad's fees, you're handing over at least 13% of your earnings.

‍Also, it seems that their commission system is not clear to sellers, with some being surprised when they had to leave 15%, 17%, or even 20% of their earnings to Gumroad.

Do you really need Merchant of Record?

We get it, having someone handle your taxes is a great thing. Gumroad will do that for you, especially since they became a Merchant of Record in January 2025.

But the question is: do you really need to use MoR? Or do you really want to pay for it?

As an MoR, Gumroad represents thousands of sellers. That means they exceed tax thresholds in all jurisdictions and have to pay additional taxes. If you sold your products by yourself, you likely would not exceed the thresholds, and neither you or your customers would have to cover additional costs.
