Easycart or Gumroad: Which suits you best?

Both Easycart and Gumroad are power-packed with its unique features. Even though they might seem similar at first glance, they differ in various aspects. So, let's dive in, explore the differences, and see if Easycart is the right alternative to Gumroad for you.

Clear-cut pricing comparison

Easycart stands its ground against the competition, not just in terms of platform functionality and user support, but also when it comes to pricing. Our commission is significantly lower, and can even shrink to a minuscule 1%! At present, Easycart offers three pricing plans, each tailored to different sales volumes:

  • Starter - $29 per month with a 3% commission
  • Creator - $59 per month with a 2% commission
  • Professional - $99 per month with a 1% commission

When Gumroad announced price hikes in December 2022, it triggered a wave of backlash and departures. Countless creators sought out more affordable alternatives. Indeed, tripling commission rates for some made Gumroad costly and unviable.

Why? A 10% commission is one thing, but Gumroad piles on extra payment processing fees for Stripe or PayPal. This is standard, as Easycart also charges a commission dependent on Stripe, our payment processor. Yet, if you tally all of Gumroad's fees, you're handing over at least 13% of your earnings. At Easycart, the total commission is significantly less. Plus, we ensure Stripe's discounts are passed on to you, not pocketed by us.

Gumroad levies a fixed commission for processing credit cards and PayPal payments (avg 2.9% + 30¢). They could utilize Stripe's volume discounts, albeit small, but it seems Gumroad doesn't pass these savings on to their clients.

Example

The commission disparity between the two platforms is best demonstrated with a simple example. Let’s say you’re based in the US, sell a $20 product to European customers, and have 100 transactions. VAT rates in Europe vary widely, so let’s use an average of 21%. For Easycart, we will use the same Stripe commission as Gumroad - 2.9% + $0.30.

  • Gumroad: The total product price, including 21% VAT, is $24.20. Platform and Stripe fees (12.9% + $0.30 per transaction) amount to $342,18, and the VAT collected is $420.00. The net profit is $1 657,82.
  • Easycart: product price is the same, $24.20. Platform and Stripe fees (5.9% + $0.30 per transaction and $29 subscription fee) amount to $201,78. VAT is the same - $420.00. The net profit is $1,798,22.

The difference in such a small sale is $140.40, which is substantial. With a higher product price or a larger number of transactions, for example, 200 or 300, the difference will be even greater. And with a thousand? You can do the math.

The conclusion? The more you earn, the more you save with Easycart!

What can you sell?

Both Easycart and Gumroad are popular among digital creators who want to conveniently sell their digital products or services online. But, what are the differences and what does easycart offer compared to Gumroad?

Easycart

With Easycart, the sky's the limit. You can sell just about any digital products - ebooks, video courses, consultations, tutoring, subscriptions, memberships, access to applications or websites, newsletters, podcasts, and audiobooks. And with the right integration, you can even sell physical products. What sets us apart from Gumroad is our ability to charge fees for any services you provide and the option to sell tickets and passes for events.

As a seller, you can set up ticket sales, specify the quantity of available tickets, and allow your customers to purchase multiple quantities and later assign them to specific individuals. This feature is a hit with business representatives who often buy tickets for their employees.

And don't forget about our QR code feature, which you can activate directly in your product panel. But QR codes are not just for tickets. Our "credits" feature allows you to assign a chosen number of scans to one QR code. This way, you can sell, for example, 10 tickets for a pilates class. When your participant shows up for the class, you just need to scan their QR code and deduct one credit, which equals one ticket.

Gumroad

Gumroad lets you sell 9 types of products: digital products, courses and tutorials, ebooks, subscriptions and memberships, physical products, bundles, podcasts, newsletters, and audiobooks. However, Gumroad doesn't offer the option to sell tickets and prohibits processing any payments related to events you organize.

This limitation is a bummer for many digital creators who not only attend conferences and industry events but also organize them. For physical products, Gumroad also imposes certain restrictions, prohibiting the sale of items such as jewelry or cosmetics.

Cart: Look and features

The appearance of your shopping cart and the mechanisms it offers to increase sales can make or break your conversion rate and sales effectiveness. With Easycart and Gumroad, you can customize your cart and add relevant features, but Easycart gives you many more possibilities. Here's why.

When it comes to the look of your cart, you can tailor it to your brand by changing the font, background color, text, links, and product variant colors. If that's not enough, you can customize your cart using CSS and get it perfectly in sync with your branding.

Gumroad

If you're a Gumroad user, you'll know that it offers pretty basic cart customization options. In the settings, you can add three types of custom fields: text field, checkbox, and conditions. You can also add a field for a discount code, switch on product recommendations, and set up upsells.

In the profile settings, you can change the background color, highlight color, and pick from six available fonts. Unfortunately, Gumroad doesn't offer the option to change the cart's appearance through CSS. While Gumroad's simplicity can be a plus for those who value quick setup, if you're after more control over the look and functionality, the customization options offered by Gumroad might leave you wanting.

With Easycart, you can leverage the "old price" feature to show a slashed old price right next to the new discounted one. This way, your customers can instantly see the sweet deal they're getting, nudging them towards a quicker purchase. You can also set up a countdown to the end of the promotion for the entire product, including all its variants, as well as individual timers for each variant. Now that's a conversion-boosting superpower!

Plus, you have the option to keep certain price variants under wraps, making them exclusively available for selected customers.

For instance, if your usual service rate is $100, but you want to offer it once for $125, Easycart makes it a breeze. Gumroad

When it comes to Gumroad, the features in this area are a tad more basic. The platform does offer discount codes and some level of customization. You can set a cap on the number of codes and their validity period, as well as a minimum amount and a minimum quantity of products that qualify for the discount. Discounts can even be applied to subscriptions - you get to decide whether the discount should apply just to the first payment or to all recurring charges.

One thing to bear in mind is that Gumroad currently doesn't offer a markdown feature that would show a new price next to a crossed-out, old price on the product page. And we all know the power of promotions on customers. The only way to showcase a discounted price is by copying the product URL with the attached code and redirecting the potential customer to that specific product variant.
